Once again we are diving into the wonderful world of fan theories with this third instalment of our blog series. In this instalment, we are looking at five amazing brands across some amazing fan theories. We have a harry potter theory which has come to life following the incredible fantastic beasts and where to find them, a though provoking look at Star Wars’ Snoke as well as a two for one as we cover both Zelda’s Link and super Mario in one theory.

Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter

Although both exist within the same fictional universe Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter are separate entities and this theory only works when we take a look at evidence from both of them. So, firstly what is the theory? In short – Ariana Dumbledore is an obscurial, or at least she was. For those who are here to read about Star Wars, Mario or Zelda, an obscurial is the host of a obscurus and an obscurus is a powerful magical creature born from magic that has been prohibited and denied by the obscurial.

Obscurial and obscuruses came to light in the first instalment of Fantastic Beasts and where to find them. In the movie, Credence was the obscurial and his obscurus was born after he denied his magical abilities. Credence was born to wizards and later adopted by anti-magic campaigner so it is easy to see why he hid his abilities.

Now it is clear what an obsucrial is and how they are formed how does this relate to Ariana Dumbledore, Albus Dumbledore’s sister? At the age of 6 Ariana was attacked by muggles which lead her father to retaliate – a retaliation that had him sentenced to life in Azkaban.  This description from her brother Aberforth best summarises Ariana after the attack: “It destroyed her, what they did: She was never right again. She wouldn’t use magic, but she couldn’t get rid of it; it turned inward and drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldn’t control it, and at times she was strange and dangerous. But mostly she was sweet and scared and harmless.”

Outside of this we know very little about Ariana. What we do know however is that her uncontrolled powers lead to an explosion that claimed the life of her mother and that she herself died at 14 during a duel between Grindelwald and the two Dumbledore brothers. You can watch a brilliant fan made reenactment of the scene in the video below.

Aside from these obvious signs there are further similarities between credence and Arianna such as the fact that they were believed to be squibs due to successfully hiding their magical capabilities. Awaiting further clarification some have extended this theory to say that it was knowledge of Arianna’s obscurus that lead Grindelwald to see the potential uses of such a creature which ultimately lead to his pursuit of the one wreaking havoc in New York in Fantastic Beasts.

Star Wars

Who is Snoke? These three words have flown around the internet since the character’s inception into the Star Wars franchise in episode 7 and of course it has led to many fan theories and here are just a few of our favourite theories on the subject.

Snoke | Star Wars Episode 7

Darth Plagueis:

Referred to in the prequel trilogy Darth Plagueis was described as a Sith Lord so powerful he had great control over life and death. Plagueis was Palpetine’s master before Palpetine, as he claims, killed him in his sleep. But knowing both the of his abilities regarding life and death as well as the world of movies and their love for un killing people we may just have discovered Snoke. In addition to this, other creations from Star Wars and the extended Star Wars universe depicts similarities between Plagiues and Snoke but it is uncertain whether or not these materials are canon or not. This theory has little evidence that Plagieus is actually Snoke but there is equally little to suggest it is not him, so who knows.

Another padawan:

The idea that Snoke is a lesser known padawan is a popular theory with Darth Sidious himself training Darth Vader, Darth Maul and Darth Tyranus it is very possible that there is another unknown apprentice who rose through the Siths’ ranks to become leader Snoke.

A hologram:

Well we already know that the Snoke we see is a hologram but one theory suggests that Snoke is little more than that. The theory is that Snoke is an AI created by the Sith. Almost as a one man or one computer Sith council designed to aid a young and still in learning Kylo Ren

Mario and Zelda

Mario and Zelda are the same stories told differently or is it that one is the retelling of the other? You know what we are getting at. There are different versions of this theory but in its simplest form Mario and Zelda are one and the same. Although both games were being worked on at the same time many people have theorized that the Super Mario universe is another version of The Legend Zelda universe (we don’t know why Zelda gets priority here – they’re both equally awesome). Obviously, this theory means that the main characters need to match up which makes Mario Link, Peach Zelda and Bowser Gannon. In the same way, in this theory the Mushroom Kingdom is Hyrule.

There have been cross overs between the games that show connections that may be more than just Nintendo splashing some Easter eggs into their games such as an unlockable mask of Mario in 2000’s The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. In addition to this the eight worlds in the Mario universe are reflective of the Eight temples in the Zelda universe with some of them following the same theme i.e. the water temple in Zelda and the water world in Mario.
