Anime is taking the world by storm. From its humble beginnings in Japan in the early 20th century through its infancy in the 1940s and the start of the anime boom in the 1980s, the global anime market is now worth $26billion globally. Astoundingly, that figure is expected to double by 2030, illustrated by the fact that Japan’s highest grossing film of all time is the incredibly popular Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, which also finished in first place on the list of the highest grossing films in 2020.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Another series that revolves around schools and students, Jujutsu Kaisen follows Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organisation of sorcerers who fight cursed spirits. There’s also a lot of cursed-finger-eating, death paintings and a battle royale to the death called The Culling Games (sounds kinda familiar). Despite its twisted supernatural nature, in 2024 Jujutsu Kaisen broke the Guinness World Record for the “most in-demand animated TV show”.
