DC Comic’s lord of the ocean Aquaman is set to hit big screens later this year. Following in the steps of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, the Dweller in the Depths will be handed his very own film, which is due for release in December.

The sixth instalment in the DC Extended Universe is directed by James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring, Insidious) and features some great acting talent. Playing Aquaman, or Arthur Curry as he is otherwise known, is Jason Momoa, whose popularity has risen since his portrayal of Khal Drogo in the HBO fantasy action series Game of Thrones. Momoa is joined by Amber Heard playing Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, and Patrick Wilson as Orm.

The film is set to focus on Arthur Curry as he struggles to reconcile the relationship between the surface world and the undersea kingdom of Atlantis. Tensions run high between the two, and the population of Atlantis has grown hostile towards the human race due to their continual pollution of the oceans. As war brews, only Arthur can broker peace but only if he’s able to replace his half-brother Orm as the king of the underwater kingdom.

Aquaman looks set to be a rip-roaring ride of intense action, incredible special effects, and dramatic storytelling, as lovers of the comics prepare to see their favourite underwater hero in action on the big screen.

An old school DC classic

First appearing in More Fun Comics (a publication by the company that would go on to become DC Comics) in 1941, Aquaman is an age old character with a rich and vibrant history. In the comics themselves, Aquaman is the ruler of Atlantis and all the oceans of the Earth. His super powers include tremendous strength, lighting speed, and the ability to command all the life in the sea.

Arthur Curry’s father Tom was a lighthouse keeper and his mother Atlanna was an exiled Queen of Atlantis. This dual heritage left Arthur with a unique physiology allowing him to live both on land and at the bottom of the ocean. He therefore uses his powers and political influence to protect both worlds, and was also a founding member of the Justice League of America.
