Disney has given us some truly magical role-models, with everything from beauty and brains to battle-skills. These Princesses not only have some killer outfits, but also some killer instincts and fight for their beliefs even when society disagrees. No longer the damsel in distress, they frequently save themselves and their Prince. Weighing up all the Disney films, I have ranked my top 5 Disney Princesses by who inspires me the most.
1. Mulan from Mulan – Undeniably, Mulan is my favorite Princess. She is extremely brave and sacrifices her own safety to protect her father. She is an incredibly talented warrior who proves that women can fight just as well as men can. Mulan doesn’t just break the stereotype that Princesses need saving, she slashes it in half with her samurai sword.
2.Elsa from Frozen – A Queen in more ways than one, Elsa learns to love her own magical powers despite what society thinks, setting a great example to “let go” of anxieties about fitting in and just be yourself. Elsa also proves that sisterly love reigns supreme and, once again, that women don’t need a man to be happy or successful.
3.Belle from Beauty and the Beast – Belle is extremely well-read and chooses brains over beauty when she rejects conceited Gaston for the Beast. She rescues her own Prince by showing him that being kind is the most attractive trait you can have.
4.Tiana from Princess and the Frog – One of the first Princesses to have a job and aspirations to run her own business, teaching us that no magical carriage can beat genuine hard work. She consistently chooses the harder path in order to maintain her morality, placing importance on this above all else.
5. Moana from Moana – Disney’s first Polynesian Princess, Moana saves her island from ecological devastation and teaches the importance of being truly independent. She has no love interest at all, instead focusing on her relationship with herself and her people. She risks her life to save her home and this undying love of the environment is what makes her one of my favorite Princesses.
