Since 1951, DC Comics has been expanding its Universe and changing the way we perceive superheroes forever. With great difficulty, I have ranked my top 5 DC Comics films of the last decade. If you haven’t seen the movies on this list get watching and if you have, they are even better the second time around.
1.) The Dark Knight (2008) – Ranking as my number one is the iconic, and unforgettably haunting The Dark Knight. Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan, this film maintains a mesmerizing level of tension from start to finish. Heath Ledger’s Joker sets the benchmark for all villains after him. Not only is his menace truly terrifying, but also there is a certain beauty in his portrayal.
10/10, I could watch this movie countless times without it losing its edge.
2.) Watchmen (2009) – Coming in at number two is this dystopian take on the superhero world, directed by Zack Snyder. The characters really carry this film as they humanize superheroes in an unprecedented way. Watchmen manages to stay religiously close to the source material while still delivering a twist at the end.
3.) The Joker (2019)- Directed and produced by Todd Philips, this movie tells The Joker’s possible origin story. Despite winning many awards, this film is far from overrated. It grounds The Joker in the real world with interpersonal, not inter-dimensional demons being his biggest tormentors. Joaquin Phoenix’s hypnotic portrayal of the Joker made this my favorite film of 2019.
4.) Wonder Woman (2017) – The fourth installment of the DC Comics Universe stars Gal Gadot as Diana (Wonder Woman). Directed by Patty Jenkins, this is one of the only comic book movies in the last 55 years to focus on a solo female character. Her origin story is explored in an intriguing level of depth, and she is positioned as a powerful agent in the jaw-dropping action sequences.
5.) Suicide Squad (2016)- Last, but certainly not least, is this star-studded team of super-villains. Directed by David Ayer, this film was not everyone’s favorite but I can’t ignore Margot Robbie’s sensational performance as Harley Quinn. I love everything from her costume, to her characterization and was excited to see her explored even further in Birds of Prey (2020).
