Movies We Are Looking Forward To In 2017

By March 6, 2017October 6th, 2023No Comments

2017 is set to be an amazing year for movies. It will be the first time that the Marvel Cinematic Universe release three films in the same year as they look to make 2017 their biggest grossing year to date. If, somehow three big hitters from the MCU is not enough 2017 will also see two films from DC comics. Wonder Woman will be the first comic book movie to have a female lead and will be followed up by the much-anticipated Justice League movie which will bring together a host of the most popular characters from the DC universe. Outside of comic book superhero movies this year will also bring with it Star Wars Episode VIII. Other movies from Disney this year will include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead men tell no tales, Cars 3 and Beauty and the Beast.

Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2

Guardians of the Galaxy: volume 2 will be the first movie from the MCU this year. So far what has been confirmed about the movie is that Baby Groot will be in it, there is a plot, some more baby Groot and apparently baby Groot is adorable. It’s sad that after such an impressive introduction into the MCU a baby tree is completely over shadowing the Guardians of the Galaxy. Whilst Groot looks amazing and even grown men had to fight back tears at the end of the first movie Guardians of the Galaxy: volume 2 has a lot more in store for us than baby Groot.

Characters like Yondu will seemingly get a bigger role and the likes of Star-Lord are looking at a big character push ahead of their appearance in Infinity War. Links to Infinity War will most likely run right through the film as Karren Gillen will be cast once more as Nebula, Thanos’ adopted daughter.

With characters, such as Ego the living planet it looks as if Disney are going to make The Guardians of The Galaxy a prolific title within the MCU. As for details, very little is known about Guardians of the Galaxy 2, maybe finish reading this post then go and watch another video of baby Groot or re-watch the first movie to quench your thirst for our favourite intergalactic heroes.

Spiderman Homecoming

After finally getting their hands on one of Marvel’s most loved characters – Spider-Man – Disney quickly introduced him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America Civil War. The much anticipated MCU debut of the wall crawling, web slinging super hero didn’t fail to impress. The red and blue spandex will be on our screens again this year as Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland) puts on the mask once more, in his own solo movie.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released In July and whilst it is Tom Holland’s time to shine as the young hero, we will also see Robert Downey JR put on his iron armour once more as the fan favourite Iron Man / Tony Stark. This movie will also see the lesser known villain The Vulture take lead as the main adversary. Whilst Vulture is not as big a profile character as other Spider-Man villains such as The Green Goblin, trailers for the movie show that Disney have raised the bar for the character, giving him a kick-ass appearance compared to more classic incarnations of the character.

Taking a different approach in terms of cast, Disney look as if they are pushing boundaries and reshaping the Spider-Man universe with the apparent absence of characters like Harry Osborn who have played crucial roles in previous Spider-Man movies and new, fresh faces like Liz Allen in place of the better-known Gwen Stacey and Mary-Jane. Disney will also deliver something different with this character skipping a movie about the character’s origin, showing Disney know their audience well. We’ve had two origin movies for the web-head in recent years and we certainly don’t need another.

We can only hope that movie lives up to the hype and if it does then Spider-Man: Homecoming may just be the best movie to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet.

Thor Ragnarok

The third instalment in the Thor movie series, Thor Ragnarok, will be the third film from the MCU in 2017. Following the absence of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in Captain America Civil War MCU fans are excited to see him return alongside the Hulk in this promising movie. Both casual MCU viewers and long-time comic book fans can expect to see some lesser known but equally deserving characters from the realm of Asgard and beyond including Executioner (Karl Urban) and Hela (Cate Blanchett). Like previous Thor movies, Thor Ragnarok will also be filled with huge stars including Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Idris Elba (Heimdall) and every fan-girls favourite Tom Hiddleston (Loki).

Fans of the comics have many ideas about what to expect, whilst casual viewers may not have a clue but both can expect another great MCU movie. Plot twists however, are likely to throw off any predictions of what will happen as rumours suggest that the film will take us as far as Sakaar – the planet from the “planet hulk” story line in the comics.

As well as a (hopefully) great standalone film we look forward to seeing what Thor: Ragnarok throws our way ahead of Infinity War. Previously Thor has been one of the biggest characters in brining clarity to what is happening with the infinity stones and with it almost confirmed that Heimdall possess the final infinity stone we can look forward to more twist and turns as we head towards Avengers 4.

Star Wars episode 8

Outside the MCU Disney will be adding the next instalment to the Star Wars saga. Following the huge success of The Force Awakens and Rogue One, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to light up the big screen at the end of 2017. Picking up where The Force Awakens left off, episode 8 will continue the story of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn’s (john Boyega) epic journey, this time alongside Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

There is very little known about the movie and everything that is found out about the movie raises more questions. It is even unclear what the title means. The Last Jedi could be referring to Rey, Luke, or someone else entirely – we don’t know. Yet with so much uncertainty the film still seems extremely promising and we have until the end of the year to find out more before its release – but hopefully no spoilers.

Wonder Woman

Back with super hero movies, 2017 will give us our first female lead from a superhero comic movie when Wonder Woman lands on screens June time. After her appearance in last year’s Batman vs Superman, Wonder Woman has received a lot of hype and her solo film has built up a lot of anticipation from fans of the DC heroine.

Gal Gadot will put on her tiara as she takes on the role of the super hero princess with a no-nonsense habit for hurting people. Trained to become an unconquerable hero Diana Prince, princess of the amazons leaves her island to fight in a huge conflict in the outside world – fulfilling her true destiny to become Wonder Woman and discovering her true power.

Wonder Woman looks to impress and give the hard-hitting heroine some well-deserved time in the spotlight.

Justice League

Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) – 2017 offers possibly the biggest DC movie to date with the super hero filled Justice League. With origin movies for only half the team (Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) it is unclear how much back story each character will receive. This shouldn’t bother the hardcore comic fans either way but casual movie goers may be left with gaping holes in their knowledge if the characters are not properly explored.

Trusting that the story will answer any uncertainties for the casual movie goer as to who the characters are Justice League could be the biggest super hero movie to hit screens this year (especially with the absence of an Avengers movie). DC are notoriously darker than the more child friendly Marvel so many viewers are expecting some big, bold, and bloody fights between some of the biggest characters in the DC universe. Whilst Batman is by far the biggest selling (in terms of superhero merchandise online) all the members of the Justice League have their own merits and fan base.

In the movie, we will see the likes of Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) in this character filled movie but the main villain will be Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) – uncle of the infamous and powerful Darkseid. Darkseid is a powerful foe whom often required the Justice League to be defeated and whilst he may be the lead villain in any follow up movies he does not appear to be the main villain of the newly assembled Justice League. None-the-less Justice League is set to be another one of the great hero films being released this year.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Johnny Depp returns with co-star Orlando Bloom later this year, as the outspoken, self-assured pirate, Jack Sparrow in the fifth instalment of the swash buckling pirates of the Caribbean series. 14 years after the first movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales promises to be as good as the four prior movies.

Setting sail once more, Captain Jack Sparrow finds himself in search of the Trident of Poseidon and total control of the seas in a bid to defeat a horde of blood thirsty pirates, led by Sparrow’s nemesis – Captain Salazar, who are out to kill every other pirate on the sea.

We just hope that this long-awaited movie lives up to the same high standards set by the previous four movies.

Cars 3

2017 will also see our favourite red racer Lightning McQueen back on the big screen in Disney Pixar’s third movie in the Cars series. This animated comedy adventure will have races, and more Lightning McQueen (we assume). Very little has been released about the plot, or anything to do with the film for that matter – but we know you still want to watch it.

Beauty and the Beast

This live action movie of a Disney classic is set to light up the box office with a reimagining of this fan favourite. The movie will see Belle’s back story change slightly as Emma Watson takes on the role of the Disney princess. The Beast (and Prince) will be played by Dan Stevens. Big names such as Sir Ian McKellen and Luke Evans also have roles as Cogsworth and Gaston, respectively. The soundtrack includes huge voices too, such as Ariana Grande and John Legend.

This is setting up to be possibly the biggest movie of the year with its all-star cast, soundtrack and one of the most loved Disney stories brought to life like never before.

These are some of the biggest, most anticipated movies of 2017. Each movie mentioned looks to be a big hitter and 2017 is shaping out to be a great year for movies. And of course, a great year of movies means a great year of merchandise, toys, and gifts – we know where your money is going this year. So along with hours in the cinema staring at the big screen in spectacle, this year we can expect to see the Justice League trick-or-treating, come Halloween and birthday and Christmas wish lists full of Star Wars, Disney, Marvel, and DC gifts.

What do you think of our list and which movie are you most looking forward to in 2017?
