Fatherhood on screen has never been simple, swinging between heroic sacrifice to the occasional “how are you still allowed near children?” moment. Few examples loom larger in pop culture than the tangled father–son relationships at the heart of the Star Wars franchise, which have shaped how generations think about dads in the sci-fi genre and beyond.
Since Paladone has been creating Star Wars merchandise for years, in the lead up to this year’s Father’s Day, we are looking at two of the franchise’s most important on-screen paternal figures, and why its most famous father–son relationship is iconic, but not exactly a model to follow.
Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker – An Iconic Family Link, Just Not a Healthy One
Although Darth Vader is one of the most famous dads in fiction, he is very much a warning rather than a goal. No one is pretending he was ever father of the year, but somehow his link to Luke is more recognisable than almost any other fictional father-child duo in the franchise.
He is absent, controlling and violent, and his big parenting moment is when he famously dropped the “I am your father” line right in the middle of trying to kill his own son. Star Wars may give us this unforgettable family connection but it is rooted in fear and secrecy.
However, Vader isn’t exactly flipping the script in terms of how dads are shown in popular culture. If anything, he leans straight into the old clichés, backing up the idea of dads as distant, aggressive, power-hungry figures rather than warm, helpful ones.
The Mandalorian and Grogu – A Better Paternal Story, Because It Is Built on Care
Then The Mandalorian arrives and quietly changes the shape of fatherhood in the Star Wars universe. It is not about bloodlines, prophecy, or inherited power, but about choice. The real turning point is not a big dramatic reveal but a slow, considered decision made by the protagonist, Din Djarin. He meets Grogu as “the asset” but gradually has a change of heart.
What follows is essentially a long and intergalactic take on parenting, creating a moment for our protagonist where he realises that he cannot go back to being the person he was before, because someone smaller is relying on him now. Din chooses protection again and again, even when it costs him.
Over the course of the series, their bond grows through their shared challenges, shifting from a bounty-hunting mission into something deeper. We see a clear found-family arc come into play as Din begins to realise that whilst he must eventually give up Grogu for his own safety, it won’t be an easy choice to make.
The Modern Shift and Why It Feels So Timely
The Mandalorian feels like a modern, pop-culture answer to past tropes. He is competent and protective but he also allows himself to soften emotionally right in front of the viewer, something the show clearly treats as a strength rather than a weakness.
More and more contemporary stories are placing fathers in caregiver roles, tapping into the enjoyment of watching paternal transformation unfold. Din Djarin father-figure transformation is an epic one to watch complete with the added enjoyment of cool armour, a jetpack, and a child who can levitate objects when he gets annoyed.
The Star Wars Father Legacy
The classic Star Wars will always be a powerful family link, partly because it is messy. Whilst families are often messy, it is not always a great representation of fatherhood, leaning towards extremes. The Mandalorian gives us something warmer and more realistic, even in a sci-fi setting. It shows fatherhood less as a person’s destiny and more as just simply turning up, doing your best and learning as you go.
So this Father’s Day, whether you are celebrating a dad who raised you on the original trilogy or one who has become emotionally invested in Grogu’s every small noise, it is worth appreciating the shift. While Star Wars gave us the most famous dad line in cinema history, The Mandalorian gives us something arguably better, a father figure who proves his love through actions.
